Who you hire to help with your book can make or break your book’s success. But who has money to gamble, trying to find the right people?
Small Business Trends estimates that 43% of the US population will be freelancing in some capacity by 2024. Upwork alone has 12 million registered users.
That’s a lot of freelancers.
The problem is, not all of them are good, and not all of them have the discipline to manage all of their projects and deliver on time. (A study by And Co showed that 87% of freelancers work on more than one project at a time.)
Between my projects and my clients’, I’ve spent thousands of dollars on subcontractors—including a lot of duds. For example, it took me three tries before I found a Kindle formatting company that did a good job.
One of my friends hired someone to design the covers for his trilogy, but the designer didn’t get the right licenses for the images he used. My friend had to pay all over again to get new covers designed—for the whole trilogy.
Another friend waited 8 months for an editor to get to his project, only to be told she couldn’t do it after all. After all that waiting, he had to scramble to find someone else.
A third friend had her cover designer flake out on her, disappear with her money, and completely ghost her—despite still being active online.
This is just among people I know, and I don’t have very many friends!
The problem is, there are thousands of providers out there who know enough to present themselves well online. How do you find the ones that will do a good job on your project, finish the work and deliver it, and not waste your money or destroy your project schedule?
As someone who used to work as a freelancer myself, here are my top three tips for finding good providers you can count on:
Look at past work. Most experienced professionals will display a portfolio with samples of work they’ve done for other clients. Do these samples look professional? Does their style match yours? Would you be proud to have similar work done for your book?
Ask about experience with projects like yours. For example, a cover designer may do amazing work for mysteries, but if you’re writing a business book, your cover needs to look like a business book, not a mystery.
Notice how they respond during the proposal process. Are they timely in getting back to you? Is their communication professional, or sloppy? Do they exhibit passion and enthusiasm? If they don’t seem to have it together before you sign on as a client, there’s not much chance they’ll have it together after they have your deposit, either.
I get it. At a minimum, if you want your book to do well, you need a copyeditor and a cover designer. But many authors are on a limited budget, and can’t afford to waste time and money hiring bad providers.
That’s why I’ve created the Superhero Support Kit.
You’ve spent the time, energy, blood, sweat, and tears to write your book. You need the right providers to present it professionally, so it will do you proud.
When you get the Superhero Support Kit, you’ll be able to assess exactly which professionals you need. You’ll know where to find prospective freelancers. You’ll know how to tell which providers have the experience and skills to do the work you need. And you’ll know how much to pay them.
Just one bad provider could cost you hundreds of dollars, or even thousands—and waste months of your time. But today, you can get the Superhero Support Kit for only $97.
To recap, when you get the Superhero Support Kit today, you’ll get everything you need to hire the right pros to do a great job on your book. You’ll understand the process well enough to be able to tell who’s got the skills you need and who’s just bluffing. And you’ll be prepared to negotiate fees and terms that are fair and make sure you get what you need.
You’ll also get my personal list of recommended pros, the Vetting Checklist, Freelance Site 101, the Publishing Services Pricing Guide, Project Description examples and templates, and the Red Flags Cheat Sheet.
All of this could potentially save you hours and thousands of dollars by making sure you choose the right pros the first time, so get your copy now.
If you implement everything that I show you in the Superhero Support Kit, and it doesn’t help you find excellent talent to help you publish and launch your book, I will give you 100% of your money back. I'm so confident, I'll give you a whole year to try it.
Cara Stein is an idealist who has stopped trying to play it cool. She believes the only reason people don’t like business or marketing is that they don’t know how to do it well—yet. She's often praised for her no-bullshit style and her wry humor.
Cara has been helping people finish and publish their books since 2012. She’s guided over 200 books through the publishing process. She’s also the bestselling author of five books of her own, including How to be Happy (No Fairy Dust or Moonbeams Required), Getting Unstuck, and Finish and Publish: Write the Book You’ve Always Wanted to Write. Her peeves include chipmunks, fakery, and the word “peeve.”
